Dr. Mahsa McCauley is a globally recognised force in artificial intelligence – a pioneering researcher, powerful voice for diversity in tech, and passionate advocate for the ethical future of innovation.
Her love of technology began young – at just seven years old, she helped her dad build a computer. That spark led to a PhD in AI and the creation of a revolutionary English Persian translation system. Today, she’s an Associate Professor at AUT, leading cutting-edge research in AI, machine learning, cybersecurity, and natural language processing – with over 80 publications and 70+ research projects under her belt.
Mahsa is more than an academic – she’s a changemaker. As Deputy Chair of AI Forum NZ and board member for NZTech, EdTech, and the AI Research Association, she’s influencing national tech policy and pushing for ethical, inclusive AI. She also serves as a Fulbright Scholar in the U.S., using AI to tackle real-world challenges in agriculture and cybersecurity.
In 2014, Mahsa founded She Sharp, a non-profit dedicated to getting more women and non-binary people into tech. It’s now a thriving community of 2,000+ members, backed by global powerhouses like Google and Microsoft.
She’s a go-to expert for media, with regular appearances on TVNZ, The AM Show and Radio NZ, and she’s captivated audiences at 60+ conferences across New Zealand and around the world.
An award-winning leader, Mahsa’s honours include the Unsung Hero Award (Women in Security Awards), Massey University Distinguished Alumni Award, and YWCA Equal Pay Champion Award.
Outside of work, she recharges through Iron Māori triathlons, home DIY projects, and quality time with her family – because she knows great ideas come when you step away and reset.
Dr. Mahsa McCauley is the real deal: a brilliant mind shaping the future of AI, and a passionate leader ensuring that future is fair, inclusive, and driven by purpose.
